Appeal Report: Tropical Depression Usman

Strong winds and continuous rains damaged the homes and livelihoods of residents in Baco, Oriental Mindoro. Kaunsayan Formation for Community Development, Inc. (KAFCODE), a local NGO based in Oriental Mindoro assessed 7 barangays. All rice lands (124.75 hectares) and vegetable fields (60 hectares) were destroyed.

SAFER launched an appeal last January 29, 2019 to help rebuild the lives of the Baco community, encouraging the public to donate cash. The public’s support is targeted to rice farmers. The appeal was featured in Ikot.PH, DZXL RMN and Green Giant FM.

Last February 12, 2019, SAFER Foundation distributed P100,000 to 40 farmer families affected by Tropical Depression Usman in Barangays Malapad and Putican-Cabulo in Baco, Oriental Mindoro. This was made possible with SAFER’s partnership with KAFCODE, AKLAS, PHILSSA and the Oriental Mindoro Municipality.

Faustina Manlolo is 57 years old and suffers from a back problem that prevents her from walking normally. She recounted that floods in their home rose up to the height of two persons during Tropical Depression Usman in December 2018. It would have cost her life to stay in their home if her son did not carry her on his back and off to higher ground. Faustina received Php2,500 cash assistance from SAFER's Public Appeal for Typhoon Usman Response in Baco, Oriental Mindoro. She will use the money to buy seeds for the rice farm tended by her son and to visit the doctor to treat her back pain and high blood. --- WAYS TO GIVE SUPPORT Donate online: bit.ly/saferph DEPOSIT: Bank of the Philippine Islands Branch: Loyola Heights, Katipunan Avenue Account Name: Shared Aid Fund for Emergency Response, Inc. Ferdinand and Jerry Salome are cousins and rice farmers. Because of the severe flooding brought by Tropical Depression Usman, their crops were wiped out and made it difficult for them to re-plant. They both received Php2,500 each from SAFER Emergency Response last February 11, 2019 in partnership with KAFCODE and AKLAS. Because of your donation, Ferdinand and Jerry Salome can purchase fertilizer to help rebuild their livelihoods more quickly. --- WAYS TO GIVE SUPPORT Donate online: bit.ly/saferph DEPOSIT: Bank of the Philippine Islands Branch: Loyola Heights, Katipunan Avenue Account Name: Shared Aid Fund for Emergency Response, Inc.
