Help 40 Families Recover from Typhoon Usman in Baco, Oriental Mindoro

ORIENTAL MINDORO, Philippines—One of the worst nightmares for a family is to lose their home and livelihood to strong winds and unrelenting rains, sometimes overnight. For the 40 families affected by Typhoon Usman, which recently hit Mindoro, this nightmare has turned into reality.

Municipal government of Baco had declared State of Calamity by the afternoon of December 30 while the Provincial government of Oriental Mindoro declared province-wide State of Calamity on December 31, 2019. Due to severe flooding caused by the typhoon, many families especially those near the rivers and creeks were forced to evacuate their home which were submerged in water up to 2 meters deep. Most of the families have returned to their homes in the afternoon of December 31, but the damage to property and livelihood left many devastated despite receiving basic relief goods from the local government.

Kaunsayan Formation for Community Development, Inc. (KAFCODE), a local NGO based in Oriental Mindoro since 1992, visited 7 barangays in Baco. In their assessment, the fishermen were greatly affected and could not fish due to big waves before and after the landfall of the typhoon. Farmers were also affected as their crops, primarily rice, had been wiped out. Many of the affected farmers have landholdings of less than 2 hectares. In the 7 barangays visited, all rice lands (124.75 hectares) and vegetable fields (60 hectares) were destroyed.

SAFER needs your help to provide them with necessities to sustain them, so they can begin recovering from this disaster. To help them rebuild from this typhoon and flooding emergency, we will need to raise Php100,000 within the next 2 weeks.

Your support will help us address the immediate needs targeted to rice farmers, providing them with the necessary resources to recover and return to daily life. We will be releasing this money to the beneficiaries after a week. This response will help bridge the gap in funding KAFCODE’s support in the community through the recovery and rehabilitation process, addressing needs in the area such as shelter, livelihood, food and water, health, hygiene, and sanitation, and community organizing.
